‘Then, quite soon, the drawing reached its point of crisis. Which is to say that what I had drawn began to interest me as much as what I could still discover.’
(Berger, J. 2012)
Berger describes drawing as a process of discovery, a means of capturing time through accumulated moments, marks, and continued correction. The virtual space created is not just a record of assemblage but also of disappearance, creating an experience within the static image.
The abstract acrylic and mixed media works of the ‘Traces.’ series embody this sentiment. They are a history of marks and decisions, evolving until the marks make their own demands and layers are added and worked in response to these.
The works within ‘Traces.’ have been produced over a six year period and explore themes of time, memory and sense of place or non-place. The process of adding and taking away is central as is embracing chance and spontaneity within a structured and an almost mechanical approach.
The abstract nature seeks to create a space for the viewer to engage and reflect. The time taken, evidence of the human hand, and quiet nature of many of the works hope to create an experience that is an antithesis of the modern social media experience.
About
Katherine Maher is a Sheffield based Artist and Illustrator who loves to sketch from life and uses this to inform and inspire much of her practice. Working in mixed media, her work concerns people and place, social issues, and seeks to pose questions and engage.
